Every exhibition, every artwork, every performance that has been seen in this space so far has been affected to a greater or lesser extent by the external conditions, such as rain, wind, cold or heat. In many cases we tried to counteract this. This year it will be different and based on deep adaptation to the existing conditions of the space and its surrounding environment. We decided to no longer present a classical exhibition, but to shape the space with its green outdoor enclosures in the form of a three-month site-specific creative residency.

We, the team of the Bärenzwinger and an• other here, are looking for Berlin-based artists or collectives who propose sustainable and winter-proof projects that invite us to walk together into and through the winter in and around the Bärenzwinger’s locations.

In winter, life in northern areas shifts from the outdoors to the indoors. Animals hibernate or go into cold torpor. Hibernation means developing special survival techniques and strategies. These resonate with the human sphere, as the welfare state is in decline. Individuals cohabit and sometimes face inhospitable spatial dimensions. To address these confrontations, forms of local self-reliance emerge, a phenomenon that irreversibly leads to collective autonomies of proximity.

The Bärenzwinger is very much at the mercy of the cold season, outdoor and indoor spaces are only vaguely separated. Technology fails, the heating is defective. What kind of improvisation and adaptation are required to respond to the cold and dark?

Art history reminds us that felt acts as an insulator to conserve heat, which can be a source of energy, a real engine of creativity and conviviality. Nowadays, what sustainable materials generate spaces for protection and sharing? What visions of ecotopias does the Bärenzwinger recall?

Practical information

Duration of the residency

01.12.2022 – 28.02.2023

Schedule

14.11.2022 – 30.11.2022 Space preparation and get to know each other

01.12.2022 Kick-off of the residency

Who can apply?

Professional Berlin-based artist (graduated), designers, collectives.

Work equipment and assistance

Work equipment and assistance are funded up to 1,250 €.
